Port Aransas, a tranquil coastal town, is home to six sites along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. These sites, scattered throughout the region's wetlands, offer a peaceful retreat for birdwatching enthusiasts. With boardwalks, observation towers, and vegetation pockets designed to attract Texas coastal birds, Port Aransas is a birding paradise. A stay in one of the Port Aransas vacation rentals, provided by Life in Paradise Vacation Rentals, promises a relaxing and rejuvenating experience for families and individuals seeking a coastal escape.

Port Aransas Sites on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail

  1. Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond: Explore a 2-acre habitat funded by prize money from the Great Texas Birding Classic, land donations, grants, and other collaborative sources. The entrance features a boardwalk leading to a 2-acre freshwater pond. During fall and spring migration, many neotropical migratory birds inhabit the trees. Efforts are underway to restore the pond after many trees were lost in Hurricane Harvey, including planting hundreds of native trees and shrubs.

  2. Port Aransas Nature Preserve: This nature preserve is a part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and aims to preserve history, protect important habitats, and promote harmony with nature. It has four sites: the Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond, Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture, Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, and Wetland Park.

  3. South Jetty: The Jetties were constructed to stop the southward movement of the pass, which was shifting at a rate of 200 feet per year. It took five efforts and 50 years to finally stop its movement. Now, the Port Aransas South Jetty is located on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, where you can observe a beautiful variety of coastal birds.

  4. Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center: This site is home to a native pollinator garden and a stunning array of large trees in the front. The highlight, however, is the two boardwalks that span 1,225 feet over the freshwater wetlands, providing a unique perspective of this rich ecosystem. The site is also part of the Nature Preserve at Charlie's Pasture South Trail, a 1.25-mile trail that takes you through a diverse range of habitats. The trail also features an observation tower, strategically placed halfway down, for a bird's-eye view of the surroundings.

  5. UTMSI Wetlands Education Center: Head here for free guided tours for up to 15 people on select days. The park spans 3.5 acres and features a landscaped marsh/seagrass pond nourished by water from the Aransas Pass Ship Channel. Visitors can stroll the boardwalk to observe migratory waterfowl and other Texas coastal birds.

  6. Mustang Island State Park: This natural wonderland offers visitors hiking and biking trails, fishing, and bird watching for over 400 species found in the area. It is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, making it a must-visit on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
